In the spring of 1951, Mrs. Harold Stemsrud, President of the Alexandria Community Council, appointed a welcoming committee composed of twenty hostesses. These hostesses then called upon more than one hundred newcomers to Alexandria. The purpose was to acquaint them with the many organizations, schools, and churches of their new town.
Mrs. Russell Anderson became chairwoman of the group, followed by Mrs. Ronald Rice a year later. A reception for these area newcomers, by the various governmental bodies and organizations, was given. This committee, through the work of Mrs. Stemsrud, Mrs. Rice, Mrs. Donald Krueger, and Mrs. Charles Taylor, developed into the Newcomers Club of Alexandria.
John McCarten drew up the Constitution and the By-Laws of the Newcomers Club in 1952, and Mrs. Donald Krueger served as the first President. Officers served for a term of 6 months, and members could be active no longer than 3 years. The average membership number then was around seventy. In 2022, the average membership was 170!
In March 2018, Newcomers became members of the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. All active Newcomers members may attend any of the Chamber's activities and events.
